The parliamentary sport committee

FC Bundestag
Martin Gerster is not only a member of the FC Bundestag but also of the sport committee

The parliamentary sport committee was designed to promote sports on the national level. The committee works with many different sport federations to promote a high quality within sports. The federal government contributes a significant amount of money to sport projects and the remaining costs are financed by the federations themselves. The committee’s role is to act as a mediator in the allocation of money within sports. In addition, they have formulated the correct framework in which to regulate issues such as gambling and doping, not only within sports, but also within society itself. The sports committee perceives this as its main priority.

The sport federations and the committee uphold an anti-discrimination policy. Moreover, they ensure that disabled people who participate in competitive and non-competitive sports are always treated equally.

The parliamentary sports committee works with both the national Olympic and normal federations. The last significant themes besides the 2006 WM football in Germany are:

  • The foundation of the German Olympics Sport Union (DOSB).
  • The fight against doping on both national and international levels.
  • Improvement of the framework conditions for honorary engagement.
  • Popular events that have taken place in Germany (the world horse-riding competition, hockey, WM, football WM for the mentally handicapped, handball WM and gymnastics WM).

After the judgement of the constitutional court concerning gambling, we have compromised and reached a decision of the revision of this field. In the foreground, we have the sponsorship from the gambling association and these earnings are given to the sport federation. Doping is always a hot topic in sports. The sports committee had various meetings and hearings against this battle and we are dedicated to finding a solution to combat it. The SPD has dedicated itself to the fight against doping and it is due to the efforts of the SPD that we now have an anti-doping law in Germany. We have established the correct framework in which to find the means to achieve this. We would have preferred a stronger punishing order, however, we compromised with the CDU/CSU in order to present a firm and united stand against doping.
